Romper el Silencio

Wed, 02/15/2017 - 13:02
Series: Thursday, 2017, February 23 - 19:30

02.23.2017 - 19.30 h

Sala Polivalent, UPF Poblenou
C/ Roc Boronat 138
Barcelona Free entrance

‘Romper el Silencio’ (Break the Silence) is a concert-environment, or songscape, that proposes a fluidity between personal expression and its outside. For this version it invites to walk along the room, to listen from different positions, to seat on the floor, etc. During the presentation you can enter or leave the room at any point.

This work arose from a real-time interaction between songs and soundscapes in Chile’s V Region. It consists of a multi-speaker sound environment, video projections, voice and a piano-ear in which underwater recordings, conversations with fishermen, fragments of songs and autonomous computer processes create t between a creation of personal expression and a listening to an environment outside of it.

By personal expression we can understand those sounds that ‘I’ want. The noise I intentionally produce, listen, imagine. Its outside is every noise to this ‘I’. The limit between the one and the the other is traced in a horizon of silence. This silence only exists as that which we silence to listen to certain noises.

Romper el Silencio

Wed, 02/15/2017 - 13:02
Series: Thursday, 2017, February 23 - 19:30

02.23.2017 - 19.30 h

Sala Polivalent, UPF Poblenou
C/ Roc Boronat 138

Urban Nature Sounds is an educational project, for environmental awareness and citizen participation. From experiential workshops, we propose the participants to explore the sound environment of some urban natural spaces within the city of Barcelona with the objective of discovering the biodiversity present in the city, understanding the coexistence between natural and urban spaces and generating environmental awareness in Citizenship through these participatory activities

Open enrollment:   The workshops will take place during two periods: winter and spring. They are open to all and are free.   The first workshops are already open:

First session:

Workshop 1: 26/2/2017 de 9.30h a 13.30h al Parc de la Ciutadella (aquest taller està pensat especialment per a famílies)

Workshop 2: 8/3/2017 de 9.30h a 13.30h a Montjuïc

Workshop 3: 11/3/2017 from 9.30h to 13.30h at Parc de la Ciutadella

Second session:

17/3/2017 from 17.00h to 19.00h: Joint session for participants of the workshops 1, 2 and 3.

What are the workshops?

FIRST SESSION: Field work (Parc de la Ciutadella o Montjuïc).

The first part of the workshops consists of presenting the characteristics of the spaces in which the activity will take place, and also presents the dynamics of the activity: objectives, sounds that can be found and tools to be used. Portable recorders and headphones will be distributed among the participants and the operation will be explained in order to do augmented listening and recordings. The registration cards will also be distributed, which contain the itineraries and serve to record the data corresponding to each recording that is made.

The participants, following an itinerary led by the trainers of the workshops, who will orient them on the sounds that can be heard, and will ask for attention in some concrete sounds. Some directed listening and recording exercises will be performed and from there participants will decide which sounds they consider relevant and will record them with the recorders. After each recording, they will note the location where the recording was made and the description of the sound on the recording binnacle. The trainers will give specific information on the animal species that will be listening and will share information cards of these species.

SECOND SESSION: Audio editing and uploading to Freesound.org in order to create a sound map. (Universitat Pompeu Fabra).

This part will take place in a classroom of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, who collaborates in this project. Participants will listen to the records they have made and decide which are the most relevant and interesting. The sounds will be edited for inclusion on the Freesound.org website. Depending on where they were registered, the sounds are geolocated and automatically placed on a map. The sounds are shared under Creative Commons licenses so that they are accessible to other people and can be reused. As a result, a sound map will be created, which will be added to the Phonos website along with all the workshop information.   This second session is optional, all participants of the tallers of the first session can participate.   What to do to register?   To register, you must write an email to: phonos@upf.edu indicating: name and surname, ID and contact number, as well as the number of the workshop you wish to attend.
